Wait Upon the Lord
One of the greatest challenges in the Christian life is learning to wait upon the Lord. In a culture that thrives on instant gratification, quick solutions, and immediate results, waiting can feel uncomfortable and even discouraging. Yet throughout Scripture we discover that God often does some of His deepest and most transformative work in the hearts of His people during seasons of waiting.
What we often perceive as a delay, God sees as preparation. While we anxiously watch the calendar and wonder when our prayers will be answered, our Heavenly Father is quietly at work behind the scenes—shaping our character, strengthening our faith, deepening our dependence upon Him, and preparing us for His perfect purposes.
Waiting on the Lord is far more than simply enduring the passage of time. It is an expression of confident faith. It is choosing to trust God's wisdom when we cannot trace His hand. It is resting in His promises when circumstances seem uncertain. It is believing that the God who loves us with an everlasting love will never overlook our needs or abandon His children. And He will never fail to accomplish His good plans. The psalmist encourages us with these reassuring words:
"Wait for the Lord; be strong and let your heart take courage; yes, wait for the Lord.” (Psalm 27:14)
Notice how waiting is linked to strength and courage. The world often views waiting as weakness, but in God's kingdom it is an act of spiritual strength. It requires faith to remain still when every circumstance urges us to move ahead on our own. It takes courage to trust God's timing when His answers seem delayed. Yet those who place their confidence in Him discover a peace that transcends understanding. Through the prophet Isaiah, the Lord gives us one of Scripture's most precious promises:
"Yet those who wait for the Lord will gain new strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles, they will run and not get tired, they will walk and not become weary.” (Isaiah 40:31)
God does not simply help us survive the waiting season. He uses it to instruct us and renew us. As we draw near to Him through prayer, worship, and meditation on His Word, He refreshes our weary hearts and strengthens our souls. The “waiting room” of God also serves as the “classroom” of God.
We see this truth illustrated throughout Scripture. Abraham waited many years before God's promise of a son was fulfilled. Joseph endured betrayal, slavery and imprisonment before stepping into God's appointed destiny for his life. David was anointed king as a young shepherd yet spent years waiting before he ascended Israel's throne. In each case, God's timing was flawless. The waiting was not evidence of God's absence, it was evidence of His preparation.
Perhaps no verse better captures the spirit of peaceful waiting than Psalm 37:7 which says, "Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him.”
What a comforting invitation! God does not simply tell us to wait; He invites us to rest while we wait. We can place our burdens, fears, unanswered questions, and uncertain tomorrows into His loving hands. The One who created the heavens and the earth, who governs the stars, and who sustains the universe is fully capable of caring for every detail of our lives.
When discouragement begins to creep into our hearts, we can cling to this assurance:
"He has made everything beautiful in its time.” (Ecclesiastes 3:11)
Notice that Scripture says His time. Not our preferred schedule or carefully planned timetable. God's perfect timing. He sees the beginning and the end, and He knows exactly when His purposes should unfold.
One of the most comforting truths for every believer is this: God's delays are not God's denials. Sometimes His answer is "yes," but He lovingly asks us to wait. Sometimes He is arranging circumstances we cannot yet see. Sometimes He is opening doors, removing obstacles, aligning people, or preparing our hearts so that we will be ready to receive the blessing He intends to give. The Lord reminds us through the prophet Jeremiah:
“For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you,
plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11)
What peace fills our hearts when we remember that our lives are not governed by chance or circumstance, but by the loving care of our Heavenly Father. He sees what we cannot see, knows what we cannot know, and is working all things together according to His wise and gracious purposes.
If you find yourself in a season of waiting today, be encouraged. God has not forgotten you. He has heard every prayer you have whispered and seen every tear you have shed. Even when His hand seems hidden, His heart remains steadfast toward you. He is working in ways you may not yet understand, accomplishing purposes that will one day reveal His wisdom and faithfulness.
Trust His heart. Rest in His promises. Walk by faith one step at a time and know that He who began a good work in you will carry it to completion. Join the psalmist in declaring:
“Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him.” (Psalm 62:5)
May we learn to wait with expectancy, trust with confidence, and rest with peace. And may we remember that our God is never early and never late, but always perfectly on time. His wisdom never fails, His promises never falter, and His love for His children endures forever!
Love in Christ,
