“Fix our eyes on Jesus”

Hebrews 12:1-2  Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

I worked for a contractor who told me “Start straight and stay straight.” If the studs are off, the drywall will have gaps or hang over the edge of a stud. If you put up studs straight, then the drywall will fit.  We need to start straight. If you see yourself going in the wrong direction, get back to where you belong right way.

As a teenager on the farm during the war years of 1940-45, most farmers in our area used horses as tractors were not available. A straight furrow was always attempted and hopefully accomplished. One afternoon I was plowing and had started a new furrow and was sighting on a telephone pole at the far end of the field. I was doing just fine when a school bus went by, and a girl I knew waved at me. I proceeded to follow the bus, and when I looked, I was sighting on the next pole down the road. Needless to say, my furrow now had taken a wrong turn, simply because I had taken my eyes away from the original target. Let us not allow our eyes to wander and find ourselves missing the mark.
